Hotel Reykjavik Saga
Contemporary Icelandic boutique — clean Nordic lines, curated local artwork, warm materials. Not flashy, but notably well-designed for the price point. The lobby and restaurant feel genuinely inviting rather than corporate.
Ask the 24-hour front desk to call your room if northern lights appear — they actively do this for guests
Why It Matters
Listed on Tablet Hotels, Green Key certified (part of the first fully sustainability-certified hotel chain in Iceland), and one of the newer upscale boutique options in central Reykjavík. The Fröken restaurant and the top-floor rooftop terrace — useful for northern lights viewing in winter — set it apart from older downtown competition.
Hotel Reykjavík Saga opened in July 2022 on Lækjargata, one of central Reykjavík's older streets, and immediately punched above its four-star classification. The 130 rooms spread across a modern main building and a newly renovated historic annex house, finished in warm taupe tones with dark grid-patterned bedheads, gold detailing, and forest green accent cushions. Top-floor suites get dramatic pitched skylights. The Art Deco restaurant, Fröken Reykjavík Kitchen & Bar, does modern Nordic cooking with locally sourced ingredients, and two rooftop terraces plus a steam-and-sauna spa round out the offer.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The hotel has a top-floor public deck specifically set up for northern lights viewing. The 24-hour front desk will call your room if auroras appear — guests report this actually happens. Best September through April on dark, clear nights.
Two large roof terraces with an outdoor patio and a glass atrium. Used for events and receptions but accessible to guests for city views and summer evenings.
The hotel has a tour/ticket assistance service to help book day trips — Golden Circle, whale watching from the Old Harbour, northern lights cruises, glacier snowmobiling, snorkeling at Silfra, and more. Many operators pick up at or near the hotel.
