Hotel San Jose
Texas minimalist / laid-back bohemian. Concrete floors, reclaimed hardwood platform beds, Eames side chairs, and a courtyard that doubles as a genuine community gathering spot. Think SXSW energy filtered through a quiet garden.

Why It Matters
One of the country's earliest true boutique hotels. Liz Lambert bought a drug-haven flophouse in 1994 and turned it — and the entire South Congress neighborhood — around. It launched Bunkhouse Hotels, birthed the South By San José festival, and put SoCo on the map. Now part of Hyatt but still deeply local in spirit.
A 1936 motor court turned Texas minimalist institution, Hotel San José sits right on South Congress behind stucco walls and lush courtyard gardens. Designer Liz Lambert and San Antonio architecture firm Lake|Flato transformed it into 40 bungalow-style rooms in 2000, and it's been Austin's cool-but-unpretentious base camp ever since. No gym, no full spa, no mega pool — but there's Jo's Coffee in the parking lot, a signature michelada in the courtyard lounge, and typewriters to borrow.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Held every winter since 2005, the Chili Cook-Off raises money for Free Lunch, which addresses food insecurity in Austin. Amateur and professional cooks compete for the prize pot.
Every first Thursday of the month, the courtyard hosts live music and food pop-ups as part of Austin's neighborhood-wide First Thursday event on South Congress.
Guests can borrow typewriters (Remington), Polaroid cameras, bicycles, and iPods/CDs from the hotel at no charge (film for the Polaroid has a cost). A genuinely fun set of analog extras.
Weekend Jazz Brunch in the courtyard — a newer addition to the hotel's regular programming.
Monthly intimate performances in the Courtyard Lounge — local musicians, curated DJ nights, and rotating residencies. Check the hotel's events calendar for current lineup.
A curated retail shop in the lobby selling Hotel San José merchandise, robes, linens, candle holders, and Austin-themed goods. Also available online at sanjosehotelstore.com.
A five-day free outdoor music festival in the shared parking lot with Jo's Coffee, running concurrent with SXSW each March since 2000. Live bands from noon daily, local vendors, pop-up bars, and food. Has featured headliners like Built To Spill, Billy Joe Shaver, and The Black Angels. Always free, always open.
