Why It Matters

Built in 1888 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, this was the oldest continuously operating hotel west of the Mississippi until 2016. The on-site Savoy restaurant dates to 1903 and features original murals by Edward Holslag — included in the Smithsonian's Bicentennial Inventory of American Paintings — plus the 'Presidents' Booth' frequented by Truman, Ford, and Reagan. Named one of the Top 20 Hotels in the USA/Midwest by Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards in 2020.

One of Kansas City's most historically loaded addresses, Hotel Savoy opened in 1889 and was — for well over a century — the oldest continuously operating hotel west of the Mississippi. The building closed in 2016 for a $50 million renovation, came back as the art-forward 21c Museum Hotel in 2018, then changed hands again in January 2025 and was rebranded under Hilton's Tapestry Collection with management by Avion Hospitality. The art museum angle is largely gone now, but what remains is still plenty: 120 rooms with high ceilings and original artwork, the legendary Savoy restaurant downstairs, and a lounge bar surrounded by 1903 Edward Holslag murals where presidents used to eat.
