Hotel Terrestre
Aztec avant-garde meets raw Brutalism. The architecture reads as pre-Hispanic ruins from one angle and a spacecraft from another. Earthy, contemplative, solar-synced.

Why It Matters
Designed by Alberto Kalach of Taller de Arquitectura X (TAX) and developed by Grupo Habita, Terrestre is one of Mexico's most architecturally significant hotels. It opened in February 2022 and immediately attracted international attention for its zero-kilometer material philosophy, 100% solar power, passive cooling system, and Brutalist aesthetic that draws comparisons to both Mayan temples and something extraterrestrial.
Hotel Terrestre is a Brutalist-inspired, adults-only villa hotel built by Grupo Habita and architect Alberto Kalach on a 20,000-square-meter stretch of Oaxacan coast between the Pacific Ocean and the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains. The 14 villas are constructed entirely from materials sourced within one kilometer of the property — brick, concrete, wood, clay — and the whole operation runs on 100% solar power, fully off the grid. Rooms have no TVs, no air conditioning (passive cooling through slatted walls and open-air design), and no unnecessary frills. King beds, private plunge pools, rain showers, hammocks, and oversized bathtubs. Books are provided instead of screens.

The hotel's private wooden beach club sits directly on Punta Pájaros golden-sand beach, a short walk from the property. Sun loungers and parasols are available — ask the concierge to reserve a spot.
Bikes are available to borrow from the hotel for exploring the coast and surrounding area.
A 15-minute walk from the hotel sits Casa Wabi, a sweeping cultural arts compound featuring a Tadao Ando-designed center, a 22-meter chimney by Alberto Kalach, a large-scale installation by Bosco Sodi, rotating artist residencies, and a ceramics workshop.
An on-property ceramics pavilion where guests can work with local clay materials in hands-on workshops. Linked to the hotel's zero-kilometer ethos and the nearby Casa Wabi arts compound.
The hotel can arrange horseback riding excursions to the Atotonilco natural hot springs in the surrounding Oaxacan jungle.
A nearby guided excursion to Manialtepec Lagoon, where the water glows at night from bioluminescent plankton.
The hotel's elevated viewing platform with 360-degree views of the Pacific, Sierra Madre del Sur mountains, and hotel gardens. Guests can arrange dinner and drinks here. Also serves as a stargazing terrace after dark.
Puerto Escondido is world-renowned for surf. The hotel is 30 minutes from Zicatela (advanced) and Carrizalillo (beginner-friendly). The hotel can assist with arrangements.
