Why It Matters
One of the most historically significant private residences on the Amalfi Coast, renovated by English nobleman Lord Grimthorpe in the early 1900s. The Terrazza dell'Infinito is widely considered one of the finest views in the world — Gore Vidal, a long-time Ravello resident, said so explicitly. The on-site restaurant Il Flauto di Pan holds a Michelin star. The property is the only hotel on the Amalfi Coast with a private helipad.
A 12th-century aristocratic villa perched 365 meters above the Tyrrhenian Sea, Hotel Villa Cimbrone has just 19 rooms and is run by the fifth generation of the Swiss-Italian Vuilleumier hotelier family. The famous Terrazza dell'Infinito — the Terrace of Infinity lined with marble busts — is a ticketed public attraction by day; after the last tour group shuffles out, it belongs entirely to guests. That's the real reason to stay here. Inside, frescoed ceilings, stone fireplaces, and late-1800s Majolica tile floors are the baseline, not a selling point — every single room has them.

Classic Room
The entry-level category, featuring antique Vietri Majolica flooring and views of either the sea or the gardens. Be aware these are the smallest rooms at the property — guests have noted the size. But the decorative quality and the fact that you're sleeping in a 12th-century villa don't change based on category.
Deluxe Room
Spacious and bright with large windows or a terrace and sea views. The Deluxe category sits comfortably between superior and suite — substantial room, good light, and all the historic decorative details that define the property.
Ernest William Beckett Suite
The flagship suite, named after the English nobleman who transformed Villa Cimbrone. A wide vaulted frescoed ceiling spans the entire room, matched by an ancient stone fireplace with relief carvings. The terrace looks directly out to the Amalfi Sea. The bathroom features blue and green arabesque Majolica tiles — a direct reference to the Moorish influences on the coast. The minibar is complimentary in this category.
Greta Garbo Suite
Named after the iconic actress who famously stayed here with conductor Leopold Stokowski in 1938 — their arrival leaked to newspapers was an international sensation. The suite is bright and romantic with vaulted ceilings and a large, separate living room. One of the more spacious layouts in the property.
Studio Suite
Spacious rooms with antique decorations, either a terrace or large balcony windows. A step down from the named suites but still generous in scale and rich in period detail — antique furnishings, frescoed surfaces, and Majolica floors.
Superior Room
Fine furnishings and either a small panoramic terrace or large windows. A solid mid-tier option that still delivers the hallmark Cimbrone experience — antique tile, period art — just in a more compact package. Some have whirlpool tubs.

Access to the full historic gardens, including the private English gardens reserved exclusively for hotel guests. Highlights include the Terrazza dell'Infinito (Terrace of Infinity), Viale dell'Immenso (the wisteria pergola walkway), the Temple of Bacchus, the medieval cloister with Luca della Robbia tiles, and the Lord Grimthorpe-designed crypt.
The hotel arranges private boat tours of the Amalfi Coast with a dedicated English-speaking crew. Far more personalized than joining public excursions — guests can access hidden coves and lesser-known spots along the coastline.
The only hotel on the Amalfi Coast with its own private helipad. Guests can arrive or depart by helicopter, or arrange scenic coastal flyovers. The hotel has reportedly opened the helipad for guest departures on special occasions.
Ravello's world-famous classical music festival runs primarily in July–August. The hotel is within walking distance of Villa Rufolo, the main concert venue. Not operated by the hotel but a key reason to visit during summer.
Expert-guided wine discovery sessions in the restored stone-vault cellars. The Red Wines Room is particularly impressive. The sommelier focuses on Campania's finest producers.
