Why It Matters
One of very few international-brand luxury hotels operating in Hakone's onsen territory, where ryokan usually dominate. Sitting on a forested hillside in Gora, a hot-spring town inside Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, this is the rare international luxury hotel doing business in territory normally dominated by Japan's traditional ryokan. It's 90 minutes west of central Tokyo, close enough for a quick escape, far enough to feel genuinely removed. The hotel runs on a 'My Home in Hakone' ethos — that means an open-hearth fireplace in the Living Room lobby, yukata in every room, and complimentary evening cocktails that guests consistently call the highlight of their stay.
