Marseille - Hôtel Dieu
Grand historic monument meets contemporary Mediterranean luxury — stone arches, warm mineral tones, leather headboards, and terraces with iconic basilica views. Serious about architecture without taking itself too seriously.
Book pool access in advance — capacity is capped at 20 people at once and slots fill up, especially in summer
Why It Matters
A registered French national monument (ISMH-listed) that won the 2014 MIPIM 'Best Refurbished Building' award. The building's footprint dates to 1188; the current structure was inaugurated by Napoleon III in 1866. Housed what was once the city's only hospital for 805 years. First Clarins spa partnership with an InterContinental in France. Also the second building in the hotel industry to receive Haute Qualité Environnementale (HQE) certification.
A former 18th-century hospital turned five-star luxury hotel, sitting on the ancient Panier hill above Marseille's Vieux-Port. The building served as the city's primary hospital for over 800 years before reopening as a hotel in 2013 — and it shows, in the best possible way. Monumental staircases, vaulted stone arcades, and sweeping terraces with direct sightlines to Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde make this the most architecturally dramatic hotel in Provence. Interior designer Jean-Philippe Nuel kept the bones intact and wove in a cool, mineral palette that feels more editorial than stuffy.
