Ion City
Dark, design-forward Scandi-cool with Icelandic craft references. Mid-century furniture meets volcanic textures. Intimate rather than grand.
Earplugs are thoughtfully left out in rooms — use them on Friday and Saturday nights
Why It Matters
One of the few truly design-driven boutique hotels in downtown Reykjavik, with in-room private saunas in suites, a standout restaurant with a dedicated local following, and membership in both Design Hotels and Marriott Bonvoy. Designed by award-winning Icelandic studio Minarc.
ION City Hotel is an 18-room boutique property planted squarely on Laugavegur, Reykjavik's main pedestrian drag. Designed by Icelandic studio Minarc — the same pair behind the sister ION Adventure Hotel in the countryside — the building's facade references traditional Icelandic weaving patterns, while inside you get gunmetal grays, recycled wood-plank floors, lava-studded walls, and a custom bird's-nest light installation hanging in the lobby. The house restaurant, Súmac, is one of Iceland's most talked-about dining destinations, serving Icelandic ingredients through a Middle Eastern and North African lens.

The hotel arranges private airport transfers between Keflavik International Airport (KEF) and the hotel. Can be booked via the ION Adventures transfers portal.
The hotel's in-house ION Adventures team can arrange a full menu of day tours across Iceland, drawing on local operator partnerships. Popular options include horseback riding in the Ölfus area, snowmobile and ice cave tours from Skjól Basecamp, private Super Jeep Northern Lights tours, hiking inside a dormant volcano, and snorkeling in Silfra fissure (between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates) at Þingvellir National Park.
One of the most requested experiences arranged through ION Adventures. A private Super Jeep takes guests into the Icelandic countryside away from city light pollution to chase the aurora borealis. Best September through April.
Snorkeling in the crystal-clear glacial waters of Silfra fissure in Þingvellir National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet. Arranged through ION Adventures with experienced operators.
Amenities & Practical Info
The details that matter for planning.
Bang & Olufsen Beoplay speakers in every room — S3 in standard rooms and Classic/Deluxe, A6 in the City Suite, A9 in the Panorama Suite.
Every room category at ION City includes a fully stocked complimentary minibar. One of the better standard inclusions for a hotel at this price point.
ION City Hotel is bookable via Marriott Bonvoy (property code RKVDI at marriott.com). Members can earn and redeem points.
Luggage room available for storing bags before check-in or after check-out.
A small in-house boutique sells handmade Icelandic wool sweaters — reportedly made by the owner's mother. A genuinely local souvenir touch.
ION City Hotel has no parking. Laugavegur is pedestrian-only. Paid street parking is available on nearby streets. The Reykjavik Parking Service website has current info.
No pool on-site. Reykjavik's famous geothermal public pools (Sundhöllin is a short walk away) can substitute.
Compact gym open around the clock. Honest caveat: it's a small room with a few machines — don't expect a full gym floor. Functional for a morning run on the treadmill or basic weights.
