Lighthouse
Post-modern minimalist tropical heritage. Thick stone walls, polished concrete floors, natural boulders framed as focal points, and an art collection by Barbara Sansoni and Ena de Silva. Keeps-to-yourself atmosphere — spacious, calm, not a party hotel.
Book a room in the spa wing — the four-poster beds and 72m² are noticeably better than the 60m² main wing rooms
Why It Matters
One of Geoffrey Bawa's final and most celebrated commissions, opened 1997. The architecture references the 17th-century Dutch fort below: commanding headland position, fortress-like massing. Rated #1 hotel in Galle on TripAdvisor. Has its own resident naturalist for ethical blue whale-watching tours and a Cetacean Information Center on-site.
Designed by Geoffrey Bawa and opened in 1997, Jetwing Lighthouse sits on a rocky promontory just north of Galle Fort, looking down on the Indian Ocean from atop a hillock. The building's imposing stone facade gives way to a famous bronze spiral staircase — its balustrading depicts the Battle of Randeniwela between the Sinhalese and the Portuguese — and airy terraces where ocean breezes sweep through. Eighty-five rooms spread across the original main wing and a 2013 spa wing addition, with teak floors, hand-carved furniture, and original paintings throughout. This is one of Bawa's last major projects and arguably his most dramatic.
