Why It Matters
Built atop centuries-old Inca and pre-Inca (Killke culture) ruins. The 16th-century Augustinian convent was restored over six years in partnership with UNESCO. Two on-site exhibition halls preserve unearthed archaeological remains. The hotel has won South America's Leading Heritage Hotel multiple times and was named Marriott International's 2018 Hotel of the Year.
A 16th-century Augustinian convent turned luxury hotel, sitting right in the heart of Cusco's historic center — two blocks from the Plaza de Armas, layered over actual Inca and pre-Inca ruins. The $75 million restoration (carried out in collaboration with UNESCO) took years to complete and shows: Killke-era artifacts are preserved behind glass in on-site exhibition halls, a Swarovski crystal chandelier representing Inti the Sun God hangs in the lobby, and the original stone shield still marks the entrance arch. At 3,400+ meters above sea level, all rooms pump supplemental oxygen to help guests acclimatize. Look, it's a big-brand hotel with marble bathrooms and Netflix on the TV, but the building itself earns the price tag.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Two on-site exhibition halls — one dedicated to Cusco's general history and one to the Killke civilization. The Killke remains (pre-Inca) were discovered during the $75M restoration and preserved in place. Access is included for all guests.
A guided tour of the historic Augustinian convent led by a monk on the property. A level above the standard historical tour — adds a living religious and cultural dimension to the architecture.
A guided walk through the restored convent with hotel staff explaining the building's history — from the Killke pre-Inca culture, through the Inca era, into the Spanish colonial period. The exhibition halls with preserved archaeological remains are part of the tour. Offered nightly. This is genuinely one of the best complimentary hotel experiences in South America.
The hotel concierge can arrange excursions to Machu Picchu via the San Pedro Train Station (PeruRail service). The hotel is a popular base for the Sacred Valley circuit — Ollantaytambo, Pisac market, Chinchero, Moray salt mines are all day-trip distance.
The hotel's resident baby alpaca lives in the courtyard patio. Guests can meet and interact with her. Weaving demonstrations with a local artisan are also offered in the courtyard.
Learn to make Peru's national cocktail from the hotel bartenders. A consistently popular activity with guests. The hotel provides the ingredients; you provide the enthusiasm.
Walk to Cusco's main market with the executive chef to see local ingredients firsthand — lake trout, Andean potatoes, white corn, local herbs. Gives real context to what's on the Qespi menu.
