Why It Matters
Named after its original architect Charles Fitzroy Doll, this is one of London's great Victorian landmark hotels. The building itself is a sight; 334 rooms, four drinking and dining venues, and a ballroom that holds 450. Voted among the best hotels in London by Condé Nast Traveller and Travel + Leisure for multiple years running (2021–2025).
A Grade II listed Victorian grande dame that has been holding down the eastern flank of Russell Square since 1898. The building — all terracotta Flemish baroque, with four British queens guarding the entrance — looks exactly like you'd imagine a historic London hotel should. Inside is a different story: Tara Bernerd & Partners stripped things back to contemporary neutral tones, then layered in Kit Miles cushions, Penguin clothbound classics, and a resident dragon named Lucky George. Reopened in 2018 after an £85 million refurbishment, it's now Kimpton's UK flagship.
