KK Beach
Contemporary coastal boutique; clean-lined and breezy rather than colonial. Think art-gallery-meets-beach-house, with warm, unhurried service and no pretension.
Book the free tuk-tuk to Kahanda Kanda for dinner at least once — the rice and curry there is excellent and the lake setting is a complete contrast
Why It Matters
Opened in 2016 by award-winning interior designer George Cooper, KK Beach is one of the south coast's most design-forward boutique properties. It sits on a 2km stretch of beach that has no other boutique hotels on it, giving it a rare sense of private-beach exclusivity. The complimentary tuk-tuk shuttle linking it to sister property Kahanda Kanda is a smart touch — guests can split a Sri Lanka stay between lakeside tea-estate and beachfront without losing continuity.
Ten rooms, one long stretch of golden sand, and a 20-metre pool separating you from the Indian Ocean. KK Beach is the coastal sibling of Kahanda Kanda — same owner (British designer George Cooper), same taste level, completely different setting. Where Kahanda Kanda sits quietly above a tea-edged lake, KK Beach plants itself directly on Habaraduwa's wide, relatively uncrowded beach, just 12km from Galle Fort. The interiors lean into a New England-meets-Sri-Lanka nautical palette: polished concrete floors, indigo-and-white fabrics, and bold contemporary art by local artists — all of which is for sale. It's compact by design, not by accident.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Walk through a working cinnamon plantation with a local planter, followed by a cinnamon-themed lunch. Habaraduwa sits in the heart of cinnamon-growing country.
Bicycles are available at the hotel (free use included). Pedal through the quiet lanes and paddy fields around Habaraduwa, or cycle up to Kahanda Kanda for lunch.
Full-day big-game fishing excursions can be arranged from the hotel.
Diving sites around Unawatuna are accessible from the hotel.
Available from nearby beaches, including sheltered spots around Unawatuna and Dalawella lagoon where turtle sightings are common.
Kabalana beach (about 6km away) is a popular surf break. The hotel can arrange lessons or board hire.
The UNESCO World Heritage-listed Dutch fort is 12km away and easily reachable by tuk-tuk. The hotel can arrange a guided walkabout with a knowledgeable local host.
Scenic boat rides on Koggala Lake, about 15 minutes away. The lake has small islands with cinnamon plantations, Buddhist temples, and bird life overhead. A genuinely good half-day outing.
The team can arrange candlelit dinners on the beach or in a sectioned-off corner of the garden for anniversaries and special occasions.
Private yoga sessions can be arranged on the beachfront lawn or terrace. Ask the hotel to set this up in advance.
A turtle hatchery and conservation centre sits right next door to the hotel. The beach itself is a nesting site for marine turtles. Worth a quick visit for context on the conservation effort.
Catamaran excursions off the coast of Mirissa, roughly a short drive east. A well-run local industry with high cetacean sighting rates in season (November–April).
Kitchen team leads hands-on sessions in Sri Lankan cuisine — a good way to learn the mechanics behind coconut curries, sambols, and hoppers before you head home.
