Book a room facing the Popes' Palace — the view through the old wavy glass at night is extraordinary

Why It Matters

One of the most historically resonant small hotels in France. You're sleeping in a 14th-century cardinal's palace, steps from the Palais des Papes, with a Michelin-starred kitchen underneath your feet and a cooking school in the original 1860s wood-burning kitchen downstairs. The Stein family has kept it independent and obsessively curated since 1990.

La Mirande is a 26-room, 5-star hotel occupying a building whose roots go back to 1309 — first a cardinal's palace during the Avignon papacy, then a noble townhouse, then painstakingly restored by the Stein family in the late 1980s to feel like a grand private 18th-century French home. It sits literally next door to the eastern facade of the Palais des Papes, and the UNESCO World Heritage monument is visible from almost every room and from the garden. The restaurant holds a Michelin star and a Michelin Green Star for sustainable gastronomy.
