La Mirande
Living museum meets private manor house. Heavy silk curtains, parquet floors, antique furniture, Belle Époque marble bathtubs, and walls dressed in hand-printed 18th-century cotton fabrics. No two rooms look alike. Chamber music concerts happen in the salon. It's theatrical without trying to be.

Why It Matters
One of the most historically resonant small hotels in France. You're sleeping in a 14th-century cardinal's palace, steps from the Palais des Papes, with a Michelin-starred kitchen underneath your feet and a cooking school in the original 1860s wood-burning kitchen downstairs. The Stein family has kept it independent and obsessively curated since 1990.
La Mirande is a 26-room, 5-star hotel occupying a building whose roots go back to 1309 — first a cardinal's palace during the Avignon papacy, then a noble townhouse, then painstakingly restored by the Stein family in the late 1980s to feel like a grand private 18th-century French home. It sits literally next door to the eastern facade of the Palais des Papes, and the UNESCO World Heritage monument is visible from almost every room and from the garden. The restaurant holds a Michelin star and a Michelin Green Star for sustainable gastronomy.

A 3-day Christmas market held in early December (now in its 12th edition), featuring artisan vendors, children's workshops, tastings, and tours. Open to the public in the hotel gardens.
First edition announced for October 25, 2025. A gourmet buffet, music, dancing, and costumed celebration in the hotel's salons — themed around the art of living of previous centuries.
Drawing and painting workshops held in collaboration with 'L'Atelier vagabond' (Valentine Champetier de Ribes). Seasonal; check the hotel's events calendar for dates.
Internationally acclaimed musicians stay at La Mirande and perform intimate chamber music house concerts in the Cardinalice room. The Musique Sacrée et Orgue en Avignon association also uses the space. Programme varies by season.
One of the best-known cooking schools in Provence, running since 1994 in the original 1860s kitchen. Resident chef Thomas Longuesserre and invited guest chefs lead cooking and pastry classes for all levels — from Provençal introductions to advanced gastronomy. Classes end with a meal at the table with wine pairings. Pastry classes for adults and children (aged 7+) also available. Aprons, utensils, and recipe sheets provided.
Occasional collaborative dinners with Provence wine estates (e.g., Château La Nerthe). Multi-course menu with matched wines and hosted by the estate's sommelier. Held at La Table Haute.
