La Purificadora
Industrial-chic, design-forward minimalism. Original 19th-century factory bones — crumbling walls, stone aqueducts, aged wood — fused with black marble staircases, onyx surfaces, and a glass-walled 30-meter rooftop pool. The palette is strictly black and white, with the occasional purple lounge chair for punctuation.
The rooftop bar draws a local Puebla crowd on Friday and Saturday nights — it can get lively. Book the Top Suite if you want a private heated rooftop pool and serious city views.
Why It Matters
Legorreta's monochromatic departure from his signature bold-color work is remarkable. Bottles and glass fragments found by an on-site archaeologist during renovations are woven into the hotel's graphic design and construction. The rooftop pool is entirely transparent — bar guests can watch swimmers from below. The sixth property by Grupo Habita, the Mexican boutique hotel group that essentially put modern design hotels on the Mexican map.
La Purificadora is what happens when Grupo Habita takes a 19th-century water purification factory in Puebla's UNESCO-listed historic center and hands it to architect Ricardo Legorreta with a single constraint: black and white only. The result is 26 rooms of sharp, moody minimalism — onyx bathrooms, original stone walls, glass floors, reclaimed timber tables — set next to the Iglesia de San Francisco and a 10-minute walk from the Zócalo. Opened in 2007, it remains one of the most architecturally distinctive hotels in Mexico.
