Why It Matters
Part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) and the Cronos Retreats collection. One of the very few genuinely adults-only luxury beach properties on Sardinia's less-developed southeastern coast. Its origin story — the building was once a literal open-air penitentiary called Villa Rei — gives it a genuinely unusual backstory for a 5-star hotel.
La Villa del Re is a 50-room, adults-only (18+) boutique resort on Sardinia's southeastern coast, sitting roughly 80 metres from its own private white-sand beach. Built using local stone and timber in a style rooted in traditional Sardinian architecture, the property originally served — of all things — as an open-air prison before its transformation into a luxury retreat. The rooms are unambiguously Italian in feel: pale tones, wooden floors, natural fabrics, and sea or garden views. And everything here — from the infinity pool that bleeds into the horizon to the wine cellar stocked with 1,300+ labels — is geared toward guests who want to do very little, very well.

This is the unit you book for a honeymoon or a significant occasion.
