Le Petit Nice
Spare, seafood-obsessed Mediterranean retreat. Architect Rudy Ricciotti stripped out the partitions so the view dominates every room. Provençal gold and lavender ground the interiors without tipping into kitsch. More family home than grand hotel — which is either a selling point or a warning, depending on what you're after.
The gastronomic restaurant is closed Sunday and Monday — book your nights accordingly and reserve a table well in advance, it fills up fast
Why It Matters
The only Relais & Châteaux property in Marseille and home to Gérald Passedat's 3-Michelin-star restaurant, which has held three stars continuously since 2008. Passedat works directly with local artisan fishermen who deliver 65+ species of Mediterranean fish to the kitchen — from forgotten varieties like galinette and girelle to pristine sea bream and mullet. The Michelin Guide also recognizes the hotel itself with the Clef Michelin distinction.
Le Petit Nice Passedat has been perched above the Anse de Maldormé on Marseille's Corniche since 1917, when the Passedat family joined two villas into a single seaside address. Three generations later, Gérald Passedat runs the place, and his 3-Michelin-star restaurant — the only triple-starred table on the entire French Mediterranean coast — is the main draw. But the hotel holds its own: 19 rooms across two villas, all oriented south toward the Frioul islands and Château d'If, with an intimacy that larger luxury properties simply cannot replicate.
