The LOUIS is a German design hotel that swaps dark Teutonic drama for something warm, sunny, and almost Mediterranean. Sitting directly on the Viktualienmarkt — Munich's famous open-air market, in operation since 1807 — the 72-room boutique opened in 2009 after Munich architects Hild and K converted a 100-year-old building with a quietly confident modern facade, French balconies and all. Rooms are lighter than you'd expect from a European city hotel: oiled oak floors, natural rubber mattresses, warm earthy tones, and those Paris-Métro bathroom tiles that Tablet Hotels rightly called out as something you'll notice before you notice the underfloor heating.
