Why It Matters

A 100+ year old colonial mansion turned 8-room boutique hotel, Macalister Mansion is the first Design Hotels member in Malaysia. Built in 1880, renovated in 2012 and again in 2020 by Singapore's Ministry of Design (architect Colin Seah), the property walks a deliberate line between heritage reverence and sharp contemporary design. Every room is individually conceived, every wall has a purpose-commissioned artwork, and the mosaic-lined swim-up pool is one of the best in Penang.

Room 2 — Four-Poster Pool View
The only room with a four-poster USA King bed. At 52sqm, it faces the front of the mansion with direct views of the swimming pool and The Lawn. Features a privately commissioned photograph by local Penang photographer Howard Tan, capturing the mansion's entrance eagle sculpture. Includes a wrought-iron balcony.

Room 3 — Balcony Suite
A private balcony for soaking up sun or watching the street is the standout here. The room features a fabric collage artwork by Malaysian artist Lee Meiling depicting the facade of Macalister Mansion. Standard suite amenities throughout: Aesop toiletries, Marshall speakers, Simmons mattress.

Room 4 — Turret Suite
The most architecturally dramatic room in the house. A wrought-iron antique spiral staircase leads from the room up to a private turret — the base makes a reading nook, the top a romantic lookout over the pool. Commissioned wire sculpture by Penangite Low Chee Peng depicts side profiles of Sir Norman Macalister and his wife gazing at each other. Bathroom has grey-and-white mosaic tiles, two freestanding showers, a freestanding bathtub, and illuminated mirrors.
