Shelter Marseille
Budget boutique with a game-room energy. Playful, graphic, slightly irreverent. Philippe Starck design on a sensible budget. More nightlife hub than urban retreat.
The Sunday brunch (€42/adult, €21/child under 12) is a genuine Marseille social event — book ahead via the website
Why It Matters
Designed entirely by Philippe Starck and opened in 2012, it was one of the first design-forward budget boutique hotels in Marseille. The restaurant menu was developed in collaboration with Michelin-starred chef Guy Savoy. The bar and live entertainment calendar make it a genuine neighborhood anchor — not just a place to sleep.
Mama Shelter Marseille is the brand's second outpost — a perfect match for France's most rough-edged, soulful city. Philippe Starck's fingerprints are everywhere: raw concrete walls, fuchsia poufs, iMacs mounted in every room, inflatable buoys dangling from the restaurant ceiling. Rooms are small but the beds are exceptional. The real draw is the ground-floor bar-restaurant, which pulls in locals as readily as hotel guests for DJ nights, live music, and a Sunday brunch that runs until 4pm.
