Lutetia, Paris
Grand Left Bank institution with Art Nouveau bones and Mandarin Oriental polish. Literary and artistic history runs through every corner. Less glossy than many Paris palace hotels — more soul, more character.
Always book a balcony room or higher if budget allows — the street-level views are ordinary but upper floors overlook Saint-Germain-des-Prés rooftops
Why It Matters
The only Palace-designated hotel on the Left Bank. Iconic 1910 Art Nouveau/Art Deco architecture, a storied guest list stretching from Picasso and Matisse to James Joyce, and an extraordinary post-WWII history as a repatriation center. Signature suites designed by Francis Ford Coppola, Isabelle Huppert, and others. Mandarin Oriental assumed management April 2025.
The Lutetia opened in 1910 as a project by the Boucicaut family — the same people who built Le Bon Marché across the street — and it has been the only Palace hotel on Paris's Left Bank ever since. The building is a rare Art Nouveau/Art Deco hybrid designed by Louis-Hippolyte Boileau, and its bones are genuinely extraordinary. After a $234 million restoration led by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte that ran from 2014 to 2018, Mandarin Oriental took over management in April 2025. The history here isn't marketing copy: James Joyce finished Ulysses in these rooms, de Gaulle reportedly spent his honeymoon here, and after Liberation the hotel served as a repatriation center for concentration camp survivors. Today the 184-room hotel holds its own as a serious luxury address — rooms are comparatively spacious for Paris standards, the Akasha Spa is one of the better hotel spas in the city, and Brasserie Lutetia is genuinely used by locals.
