Why It Matters

Germany's Best City Hotel 2024; home to Matsuhisa Munich, the first Nobu Matsuhisa restaurant in Germany; a 19th-century Altstadt building with architecturally eccentric rooms including a turret suite on floor 6; beloved by regulars including conductors who perform at the nearby Munich Opera.

A 19th-century building in Munich's Altstadt that only became a hotel in 1990, though you'd never guess it was a newcomer — regulars still call it 'the Rafael' after its former name, and many have been coming several times a year since opening day. This is a small, quiet, 73-room property with serious character: sloping eaves, turret sitting rooms, antiques in the halls, and a rooftop pool from which you can spot the Alps on a clear day. The dining alone is worth the stay, anchored by Germany's first Matsuhisa restaurant.

Bavaria Suite

From EUR4,100 / night

Inside the historic corner tower of the building, this 75 sqm suite has one of the most distinctive layouts in Munich. A circular bedroom with views from five windows, 180° across the city's red rooftops and spires, leads via a sliding door into a separate living room decorated in late Biedermeier style with Nymphenburg artworks. The bathroom connects to a large walk-in wardrobe. The turret architecture makes it genuinely memorable — this is the room (formerly known as room 608) that Prince Charles reportedly favoured.

Mandarin Room

The flagship room category and the largest standard rooms in the hotel. Oak wood parquet floors throughout, with either sloping eaves or 18-foot ceilings depending on floor and position. Views face either the city or the Hofbräuhaus. Artwork by Munich artist Felix Rehfeld — modern prints on alubond inspired by the Alps. Feels like a very well-appointed private flat rather than a hotel room.

The décor includes a Nymphenburg relief (the Royal Bavarian porcelain manufacturer), polished chrome walls, and prints by Felix Rehfeld. The balcony works perfectly for alfresco drinks. This is the one to book for a special occasion.
