Melia Ba Vi Mountain Retreat
French colonial heritage meets Vietnamese village architecture. Rustic-luxe, nature-immersive, wellness-forward. Genuinely quiet — the mist and forest feel far more present than any city noise.
The complimentary buggy tour of the French ruins runs mornings and afternoons — do it at sunset for the best light and atmosphere
Why It Matters
Meliá's first mountain retreat and its flagship wellness property in Vietnam. The grounds contain actual French colonial ruins — canon emplacements, the Governor-General's villa, a helipad — which guests tour by buggy. The history is built into the landscape, not just the decor.
Sixty years before Meliá arrived, French military commanders were building stone villas and fireplace-equipped bungalows at 600 metres altitude on Ba Vi Mountain. Meliá now runs the whole show — 44 rooms and villas spread across a forested hillside inside Ba Vi National Park, about 55km west of Hanoi (give yourself two hours in traffic). Dark timber, rattan lampshades, stone fireplaces, and mountain-view balconies make the rooms feel like a warmer version of what colonial officers once enjoyed here. It's the kind of place that has no TVs in some rooms by design — the idea is that you listen to birds instead.
