Why It Matters
San Antonio's only Forbes Four-Star hotel AND spa in the same building. The 17,000-square-foot Mokara Spa is accessible to hotel guests at no extra charge for the sauna, steam room, and whirlpool — that's rare at this level. Ostra, the riverfront seafood restaurant with its stone-and-glass oyster bar, is a legitimate dining destination. The rooftop pool has some of the best city skyline views in downtown.
The Mokara is San Antonio's only Forbes Four-Star hotel and spa — and it wears that distinction pretty confidently. It sits right on the River Walk in a building that started life as a saddle factory at the turn of the 20th century, and that history still shows in the bones of the place. Just 97 rooms and two suites keep things intimate enough that the front desk will actually remember your name. Rooms were comprehensively renovated in 2025 with hand-stitched leather furniture, horsehair-patterned wallpaper, handcrafted woodwork, and new free-standing soaking tubs — a serious upgrade from the previous Old World look.

The baseline room. High ceilings, marble finishes, fine linens, mini bar, coffee maker, and a flat-screen TV. Functional ample workspace makes it solid for business travelers too. Some face internal areas rather than the river — if views matter, upgrade.

The room to book if you're treating yourself. Private balcony looks directly over the River Walk — you wake up to the slow-moving green water and the sounds of the city below. Reviewers consistently say the upgrade is worth it. Same marble and high-ceiling finishes as the Premier, but with that view.
1 KingRiver Walk Suite
The biggest room in the house at 800 square feet. Separate living area and bedroom, panoramic River Walk views, and a generously sized bathroom. Good for longer stays or anyone who wants actual space to spread out. There are only 2 suites in the hotel.

Positioned close to Mokara Spa, these rooms are specifically set up for the wellness-minded guest. King bed, oversized jetted tub for two, hardwood floors, floor-to-ceiling windows. More serene than the standard rooms. Post-renovation versions now include new free-standing soaking tubs.
