Why It Matters

It is a legally protected national monument — a refurbished Baroque seminary built in 1598 on Inca foundations. The 300-year-old cedar tree anchoring the central courtyard is the last one remaining in Cusco. The hotel hosts one of the finest collections of 18th-century colonial religious art in the region, with original paintings throughout guest areas and bedrooms.

A Baroque seminary built in the late 16th century on the foundations of an Inca palace — this is one of those hotels where the building itself is the main attraction. Rooms once used by clergy now have marble bathrooms and hand-woven alpaca blankets. At 3,399 meters (11,152 feet) above sea level, it is also one of the highest luxury hotels on earth, and the altitude is real: the hotel offers oxygen-enriched rooms and welcomes guests with muña tea on arrival. Two blocks from the Plaza de Armas, it is a protected national monument and one of the most historically significant places to sleep in all of Peru.
