Mount Lofty House & Estate
Grand historic manor house meets contemporary South Australian wine country luxury. Think 4-poster beds, 15 open fireplaces, period furnishings, and a 175-year-old wine cellar — all with a warmth that stops it feeling like a museum. Adults-only (16+), which keeps the atmosphere decidedly grown-up.
Book Hardy's Verandah well in advance, especially for weekends — it fills fast and requires a reservation via OpenTable.
Why It Matters
Three consecutive years as Australian Hotels Association Best Overall Hotel (2023–2025). Hardy's Verandah Restaurant has held 3 Chef Hats from the Australian Good Food Guide for five consecutive years. The estate grows the two highest-altitude vineyards in South Australia at 727m. It's also the only property to have survived the 1983 Ash Wednesday fires and been fully restored from historical records — then went on to become one of the country's most-awarded hotels.
Built in 1852 by Arthur Hardy as a summer retreat, Mount Lofty House quickly became South Australia's most notorious address for lavish entertaining — Martha Hardy once described their lifestyle as 'a kind of feudal splendour.' The house burnt to the ground in the 1983 Ash Wednesday bushfires and was painstakingly rebuilt from historic photographs, opening as a boutique hotel in the late 1980s. Today it sits on 30 acres above the Piccadilly Valley, just 15 minutes from Adelaide CBD, and has racked up more awards than almost any hotel in Australia — including TripAdvisor's #1 Hotel in Australia & the South Pacific in 2024.
