Oriental Hotel Kobe
Cosmopolitan luxury with a distinctly Kobe character — equal parts East and West, old and new. The Art Deco aesthetic recalls interwar international travel, and the building sits right in the former foreign settlement, surrounded by Meiji-era Western architecture.
The cocktail bar (The Bar J.W. Hart) is named for the British architect who designed Kobe's foreign settlement — worth knowing before you walk in
Why It Matters
The original Oriental Hotel, founded in 1870, was the hotel that helped put Kobe beef on the world map. The current incarnation carries that legacy, with a serious steak house serving Kobe and Hida beef, and a high-end sushi counter (Kanesaka) that draws non-guests as much as hotel guests. It was also listed in Tablet Hotels.
One of Kobe's most storied addresses, this hotel traces its roots to 1870 — though the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake forced a complete reinvention. The current building opened in March 2010 in the city's former foreign settlement district, and the designers packed in as much historic atmosphere as a modern structure can hold. Think Art Deco touches, Thai silk bed throws, Arflex sofas, and a cocktail bar named for J.W. Hart, the British architect who designed Kobe's international settlement. Four restaurants, 116 rooms across six room tiers, and harbor or Mt. Rokko views depending on which direction you face.
