Why It Matters
One of the few hotels in Sri Lanka with a genuine literary identity — annual sponsor and venue for the Galle Literary Festival, and home to the Edward Lear Prize for Poetry. Member of Pure Life Experiences and Tablet Hotels. Won 'Most Instagrammable Hotel' at the Small Luxury Hotels Awards in 2017. Rooms designed by 20+ international artists and artisans.
The name alone sets expectations. This independently owned 17-suite hotel plants itself right at the Indian Ocean's edge in the small village of Thalpe, about 30 minutes down the coast from Galle Fort, with the kind of whimsical, maximalist personality that either instantly clicks or doesn't. Four buildings — painted Blue, Beige, Pink, and Yellow — house rooms ranging from a compact 340 sq ft suite with ocean balcony up to a 1,425 sq ft two-bedroom suite with a full kitchen. Art and furniture created by more than 20 international artists fill every corner, and the whole thing is themed around Edward Lear's Victorian nonsense poem. The beach directly in front is rocky and not swimmable, but the 18-meter pool overlooking the water handles that just fine.
