Hvar's first and only full-service 5-star hotel sits directly above city hall on St. Stephen's Square — the largest square in Dalmatia — in a neo-Renaissance building that dates back to a 13th-century Duke's Palace. Rebuilt in 1899 as Kurhotel Kaiserin Elisabeth under the patronage of Austrian Empress Sisi, it opened formally in 1903 and has been attracting royalty and well-heeled travelers ever since. The facade is all historic stone and Venetian lions; step inside and the interiors are decidedly contemporary — sleek, calm, and edited — with hand-painted Hvar murals adding just enough local color to 45 rooms and suites.
