Why It Matters

A 1924 Art Nouveau landmark on Cagliari's harborfront, Palazzo Tirso is one of Sardinia's most architecturally striking hotels. But the exterior is the only thing traditional about it — inside, Milan's Studio Marco Piva reimagined the whole building as a sleek contemporary luxury hotel, with furnishings custom-made by Poltrona Frau (whose founder was actually born in Sardinia). The result is 85 rooms full of gently curving forms and bold color, sitting right above the city's marina with views over the Golfo degli Angeli.
