Why It Matters
The building itself is the main event. Designed by the Burnham Brothers as the regional office of Union Carbide and Carbon Co., and designated a Chicago Landmark in 1996, the building's tower facade of dark green terracotta with gold leaf accents is one of the city's most recognizable silhouettes. Pendry moved in as the first hotel tenant in 2021.
Pendry Chicago occupies the 1929 Carbide & Carbon Building, a 37-story Art Deco landmark on Michigan Avenue whose dark green terracotta tower and gold leaf trim make it one of the most striking addresses in the city. The hotel opened in 2021, bringing contemporary interiors, serious dining, and a rooftop bar to a building that was already worth visiting for the architecture alone.
