Petronilla is a 12-room boutique hotel run by the Frosio family in Bergamo's lower city (Città Bassa), in the quiet San Lazzaro neighbourhood where paved streets connect modern Bergamo Bassa to the medieval Città Alta. The building mixes a mid-century 1950s sensibility with Bauhaus references and contemporary design icons — think an aluminium four-poster bed next to a Giorgio De Chirico canvas, or a Caravaggio fruit-basket print blown up to wall size above the headboard. Service is genuinely personal: the same family runs a Michelin-starred restaurant 15 minutes away, and breakfast alone (baked to order, homemade yogurt, valley-recipe apple tart) is worth the stay.

The step-up room, with furnishings by big-name designers manufactured by Italy's top furniture houses. Double or twin beds, padded classic, rigorous design or cherry wood. Spacious marble or resin bathroom with large hydro rain shower, big shelves and generous mirrors. Warm colours, cozy atmosphere, king-size bed. Wardrobes and furniture pieces — desk, reading chair — are bespoke design items made with quality materials to feel generous despite the room's footprint. Bathroom is marble or resin, with a hydro shower with rainfall-effect head. Works well as a single-use double for those who want extra space.

Single Queen
A spacious single on the 4th floor — roomy enough for two guests if needed. Custom-designed headboard and desk, furniture and lighting pulled from icons of international design. The statement piece is a large Caravaggio fruit-basket print blown up behind the bed. Bathroom features Iranian yellow Travertine surfaces and an XL shower.

The showstopper. A bright, airy room on the 2nd floor with a terrace. The scene: a Zanotta baseball-glove sofa at the foot of a floating aluminium four-poster draped in linen sails. Opposite, a large print of De Chirico's 'Canto d'Amore' — the glove in the painting winking at the glove chair below. Nordic design chairs and a large table-desk complete the picture. The bathroom is arguably the best in the hotel: whirlpool tub, Teuco hydro-shower lined in green quartzite, double sink. Easily the top pick for a special occasion.
