Punta Caracol Acqua Lodge
Rustic eco-luxury. Caribbean jungle meets overwater bungalow — think Robinson Crusoe with a king-size bed, not a Maldives spa resort. Simple, intimate, and entirely off-grid in spirit.

Why It Matters
One of the very few genuine overwater bungalow properties in Panama's Caribbean. Featured in Travel & Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, Outside Magazine, and The New York Times. Michelin Guide listed. Sits atop a coral reef with 2km of coastline and a private 100-acre rainforest reserve — 98% untouched.
Nine handcrafted overwater bungalows strung together on stilts above the Caribbean Sea — built using traditional Bocas del Toro techniques with palm-thatched roofs, native hardwood floors, dark wood and bamboo colonial furnishings, and French doors opening to private terraces. The whole place runs on solar power. There's no AC, no in-room electrical outlets, and no road to get here. A 15-minute boat transfer from Bocas Town drops you into a genuinely remote world where stingrays glide under the floorboards and dolphins surface at sunrise. Founded by José Luis, who turned a university thesis into a 25-year-old floating lodge with its own 100-acre rainforest reserve.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The lodge runs boat excursions to Starfish Beach (Playa Estrella), about 10 minutes along the coast. Good for snorkeling, spotting starfish, swimming, and grabbing food from the local vendors.
Staff can arrange private boat charters to nearby uninhabited islands and beaches in the Bocas del Toro Archipelago.
Boat trips to Dolphin Bay (officially Laguna de Bocas del Toro) to observe bottlenose dolphins. Note: choose operators carefully — some boats in Bocas del Toro have been known to harass dolphins.
Take a short boat ride to shore and explore nearby trails on electric bikes. Pass small local communities, stretches of untouched nature, and empty beaches. Available as part of the Nature & Discovery package.
Organized guided snorkeling excursion to nearby reefs and marine sites beyond the lodge's own reef. Included in the Nature & Discovery package; likely available separately for a fee.
Single-person kayaks are provided complimentary to all guests. Paddle around the bungalows, through nearby mangrove channels, or along the coastline. No guided kayak tours are explicitly scheduled, but staff can point you toward good routes.
Snorkel gear is included with every room. The lodge sits on a 2km stretch of coral reef — you can snorkel directly from your private deck or the bar solarium. Coral gardens, parrotfish, stingrays, giant starfish, and schools of tropical fish are regularly spotted. The reef directly under the bungalows reportedly holds the best marine life.
Part of the Nature & Discovery package — a local cacao experience in the Bocas del Toro region.
Organized boat excursions to visit indigenous Ngäbe-Buglé communities in the Bocas del Toro region — includes river crossings and trekking. A culturally immersive add-on trip.
Take a kayak through the nearby mangrove channels. A walkway from the overwater bungalows also connects to the mangroves on the island for those who prefer to explore on foot.
Guided hikes through the lodge's surrounding rainforest reserve (100 acres, 98% untouched). Wildlife spotted includes sloths, capuchin monkeys, caiman, and birds including scarlet macaws. Guided rainforest hikes can also be arranged to explore beyond the private reserve.
A private dinner served on your own palafito deck, arranged on request. Popular with couples and honeymooners. Wine and set-up included.
