Devigarh
Rajput heritage meets contemporary minimalism — a serious design hotel that happens to live inside an 18th-century fort. Clean lines, white marble, semi-precious stone inlays, and no clutter. The vibe is serene and quietly opulent, not flashy.
Book the Aravali Suite for spectacular hill views from large bay windows; the Garden Suite is simpler but beloved by repeat guests for its private patio and peace
Why It Matters
One of India's most architecturally striking hotels — the contrast between the faded, ornate palace exterior and the ultra-minimalist marble-floored interiors is genuinely arresting. Frommer's once called it 'the best hotel on the subcontinent.' The New York Times listed it as one of India's leading luxury hotels in 2006. Featured in Discovery Travel's Dream Hotels alongside Taj Lake Palace and Rambagh Palace.
An 18th-century Rajput palace perched on a hilltop in the Aravalli Range, 28 km northeast of Udaipur. The restoration — 15 years, 750 workers, original locally mined marble — delivered something genuinely unusual: a palace whose weathered stone exterior gives way to sparkling all-white minimalist suites inlaid with malachite, lapis lazuli, and mother-of-pearl. Marwari horse murals, mirrored ante-chambers, jharoka windows, and a thousand candles at night. But none of that traditional grandeur comes at the expense of comfort — heated pool, a serious Ayurvedic spa, and food grown in the chef's own garden.

UNESCO World Heritage Site established in the 7th century — 14 square kilometers, 100+ temples, palaces, and reservoirs. Symbol of Rajput valor, famous for withstanding three Mughal sieges. Hotel guide recommended.

Short drive from the hotel to Eklingji, a 1,000-year-old Shiva temple complex featuring 108 shrines and a 3.5-ft four-faced black marble idol — still visited by the Maharana of Udaipur. Paired with Nagda, the ancient capital of Mewar, with 7th–10th century temple ruins beside a lotus lake.
Full-day guided tour including Udaipur City Palace (1559), Crystal Gallery, the Shree Jagdish Temple, and a scenic Lake Pichola boat ride. Afternoon free for markets, miniature painting shopping, or silver jewelry browsing.
About an hour away, the turmeric-tinted hills where Maharana Pratap fought the Mughal army. Fort museum with vivid storytelling, child-friendly. Outside, camel rides and local rose water shopping — the region supplies RAAS Devigarh's own roses.
Kumbhalgarh features the world's second-longest wall (84 km) and 360 temples, with wildlife sanctuary views. En route, stop at Ranakpur Jain Temple — 29 halls, 1,444 carved marble pillars; non-Jains admitted after noon.
Major pilgrimage site 12 miles away housing the revered 12th-century idol of Shrinathji (Krishna). Eight daily darshans; the Rajbhog breakfast darshan is best for tourists. Hotel can provide a guide to navigate gender-segregated entry and interpret rituals.
An hour's drive up into the Aravalli hills, the Monsoon Palace offers panoramic views of Udaipur and surrounding countryside. Open 9am to sunset, takes roughly 2.5 hours. Access by car only — steep, unsafe roads on foot.
Book the Silver Lounge (10am–8pm) for a private movie screening or to watch sports. Also works for small celebrations and family gatherings. Contact the palace concierge to arrange.
