Le Royal
Colonial grand hotel with Art Deco and Khmer touches. Quiet, garden-wrapped, and deliberately old-world. This is the kind of place where the staff wear traditional Cambodian headwear and the bar still displays Jackie O's lipstick-stained glass.

Why It Matters
One of Southeast Asia's most historically loaded hotels. It opened in 1929 as the tallest building in Phnom Penh and has been the center of the city's dramatic 20th-century story ever since — from Jackie Kennedy's 1967 visit to journalists filing Killing Fields stories from their rooms during the Khmer Rouge years. The Cambodian Royal Family gifted the hotel its crest and secret recipes still used in Restaurant Le Royal today.
Built in 1929 and painted in its original lotus white, Raffles Hotel Le Royal is the grand dame of Phnom Penh — and it earns that title without trying too hard. The hotel reopened under the Raffles flag in 1997 after a careful renovation, and today its 175 rooms carry the same French colonial bones: high ceilings, hardwood floors, and marble bathrooms dressed up with Khmer art and Art Deco flourishes. The Elephant Bar pours Jackie Kennedy's signature Femme Fatale cocktail and hosts what is genuinely one of Asia's largest gin collections. Restaurant Le Royal serves recipes gifted directly by Cambodia's Royal Palace — not a marketing claim, an actual arrangement.
