SIDE
Architecturally bold, minimalist-luxe design hotel with a creative-class crowd. Think art-world meets high-end business travel. The lobby alone is worth a visit.
Book a Flying Suite (S–XXL) on the top floors for the rooftop city views — worth the premium, especially Suite M with its freestanding coloured bathtub in the bedroom
Why It Matters
The collaboration between architect Jan Störmer, interior designer Matteo Thun, and lighting artist Robert Wilson makes this one of the most design-forward hotels in Germany. Robert Wilson's light installation in the 28m atrium — shifting colour and intensity like breaking waves — is genuinely unlike anything else in Hamburg. The hotel is also a member of Design Hotels and available through Marriott Bonvoy.
SIDE is a 5-star superior design hotel in central Hamburg, built in 2001 and designed by architect Jan Störmer (Störmer Murphy and Partners). The real showstopper is a 28-metre-high atrium lobby encased in frosted glass, pulsing with ever-changing light choreography by New York installation artist Robert Wilson. Milanese designer Matteo Thun handled the interiors — clean, warm minimalism in buttery creams and rich browns in the rooms, offset by pops of saturated colour in the public spaces. It's the go-to for Hamburg's creative and business crowd, steps from the Staatsoper.

An immersive behind-the-scenes kitchen event format offered by the hotel for groups. Cooking, dining, and entertainment in the [m]eatery kitchen.
A transparent dome structure on the SIDE rooftop — a genuinely unusual venue available for private hire above the Hamburg skyline. Used for dinners, corporate events, and seasonal experiences including Christmas editions.
The Sky Lounge sits above the atrium on the upper floors and connects to a rooftop terrace with panoramic views over Hamburg. Available for private events and accessible to hotel guests. In summer this is one of the better rooftop perches in the city.
