Why It Matters
The only major palace hotel in Uruguay, built in 1921 and declared a National Heritage building. It was the first hotel in Uruguay certified single-use plastic free by the Ministry of Environment. The basement casino (400+ slots, 23 table games) and a rooftop view over the Río de la Plata add dimensions most luxury hotels can't match.
The former Hotel Casino Carrasco — once called 'un palacio en la arena' (palace in the sand) — sat empty for nearly two decades before Sofitel restored it and reopened it in March 2013. The building is a genuine 1921 National Heritage landmark with a stained-glass atrium, marble columns, and chandeliers that feel more palace than hotel. On Saturdays, the hotel even runs formal tours of the interiors for non-guests. Rooms come in two flavors: garden/city views or river views over the Río de la Plata, and the suites in the building's towers are genuinely impressive. The Carrasco neighborhood just outside is one of Montevideo's most affluent — boutique shops, good restaurants, and the Rambla waterfront promenade all within walking distance.
