Sonnenalp Hotel
Warm, wood-paneled Bavarian alpine lodge. Think deer antlers, fondue pots, and staff who remember your name — not a sleek modern resort. Authentically European in a way that no amount of interior design budget can fake.

Why It Matters
Same Faessler family ownership that traces back to post-WWI Germany; member of Leading Hotels of the World; Michelin-recognized; private ski lounge at Gorsuch Ski Café just 50 steps from Gondola One; every single room has either a Gore Creek or Vail Village view and a gas fireplace. One of very few genuinely European-style alpine resorts in the entire United States.
Bavaria meets the Rockies at this family-owned alpine resort in the heart of Vail Village — and it pulls it off without a trace of kitsch. The Faessler family, who opened the original Sonnenalp in Ofterschwang, Germany after World War I, built this Colorado counterpart into 112 suites and 15 hotel rooms, all furnished with custom Bavarian pieces, gas fireplaces, and heated marble bathroom floors. Four on-site restaurants, a full-service spa with an oxygen bar, a private ski lounge steps from Gondola One, and 40+ years of genuinely personal family hospitality make it one of the most distinctive places to stay in any U.S. ski town.
