Soori Penang is a 15-suite boutique hotel built inside a cluster of restored Straits Chinese shophouses within the Khoo Kongsi clan compound, one of George Town's most significant heritage sites. Architect Soo K. Chan of SCDA Architects designed the project as a personal homecoming — he literally grew up in these shophouses — and the result skips the usual Peranakan kitsch entirely. Custom onyx lamps, glazed light wells over still-water features, and oversized rice grinders repurposed as fountains make the interiors feel like memory given physical form.
