Why It Matters
Opened in September 2015, it's become the anchor of the SoCo neighborhood — hosting Austin's beloved First Thursday tradition, earning Michelin recognition for its on-site restaurants, and drawing a mix of locals and travelers who come for the dining as much as the beds. OTOKO is consistently cited as one of Austin's best omakase experiences.
South Congress Hotel is an 83-room boutique hotel on Austin's SoCo strip, designed by architect Michael Hsu and MAI Studio. The aesthetic is rugged-minimalist — hardwood floors, midcentury modern furniture, leather, denim, and unfinished wood that nod to the Texas terrain. But the rooms are almost a secondary point. This place was purpose-built to be the neighborhood's living room: locals stream in for First Thursday parties, DJ nights, and some of the most serious dining on the street, from the MICHELIN-recommended steakhouse Maie Day to the 12-seat omakase counter OTOKO.

The hotel's top suite. Genuine separate bedroom and living areas — not just a studio — both with hardwood floors, custom furnishings, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking South Congress Ave. The living area opens onto a massive 300 sq ft furnished private patio with pool and bar views. Separate bedroom with king pillowtop, bespoke linens, and small workstation. In-room dining provided by Café No Sé.
KingMonroe Suite
Named for a nearby Austin cross street. Studio-style layout with a furnished private patio overlooking the rooftop pool and bar. Has a dedicated seating area, half-bath, and a locally sourced full bar — good for hosting a small gathering. Deep-soaking tub and two in-room LED TVs.
KingPoolside Premier Suite
More square footage than the Poolside Suite, with a private balcony overlooking the rooftop pool. Full bar stocked with locally made drinks and snacks. Deep-soaking tub plus a large walk-in shower, dual vanity, and separate water closet.

SCH's signature monthly event, held the first Thursday of every month. Features a live performance by a local Austin act, DJs across multiple hotel spaces, drink specials, and pop-up activations. Past performers include The Black Pumas, CAPYAC, and The Peterson Brothers. Free to attend.
Resident DJs spin every Thursday (non-First Thursday weeks) and every Friday from 7–10pm in the Lobby Bar. Mix of classic grooves and new sounds.
A vintage-style Photomatica photo booth in the Lobby Bar — a classic Austin keepsake and something of a local landmark on SoCo. $6.50 for two copies of a photo strip.
