TA’AKTANA, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Labuan Bajo
Ultra-luxury cultural resort — Indonesian heritage woven into every surface and ritual, butler-grade service, strong focus on sustainability and local provenance
Villa minibars are restocked nightly (complimentary); suite minibars are only complimentary once per stay — ask if unclear
Why It Matters
First overwater villas in the Labuan Bajo region; only international luxury chain hotel in Flores; direct gateway to UNESCO-listed Komodo National Park; deep-dive into Manggarai and Bajo Sea Nomad culture through architecture, dining, and programming; complimentary airport transfer with staff greeting guests at the jet bridge
Marriott's first property in Labuan Bajo — and The Luxury Collection's second in Indonesia — TA'AKTANA opened in May 2024 on 16 hectares of Flores Sea waterfront, a ten-minute drive from Komodo Airport and the UNESCO-listed Komodo National Park. Designed by ANP Interiors, the name means 'green land' in the local Manggarai language, and the architecture earns it: cone-shaped roofs reference the traditional mountain village of Wae Rebo, while spider-web patterns in the stonework and garden layouts echo the region's iconic Lingko rice fields. Seventy accommodations range from hillside junior suites to seven overwater villas floating above a house reef where clownfish and starfish are visible from the terrace. The place runs with the kind of unhurried, name-remembering hospitality that makes guests forget they arrived by small prop plane.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
Traditional Manggarai ceremonial men's dance performed on property on Thursday evenings. Symbolizes strength and unity. Genuine cultural experience, not a tourist recreation.
Guided tour to Manggarai heritage sites including ikat and songkat weaving demonstrations, the traditional caci whip dance at a mountain village, and visits to Batu Cermin Cave, Rumah Tenun, and Melo Village. Approximately IDR 8,000,000 ($517) for two guests.
Epicurean journey starting at sunrise on the water with local fishermen, followed by cooking the catch using traditional Bajo techniques. A practical, meaningful immersion into the sea nomad way of life.
Rotating recreation calendar including sunrise yoga, sunset yoga, boxing, aqua aerobics, and circuit training sessions. 24-hour gym access with high-quality cardio and weight equipment is complimentary for all guests.
Day trips into UNESCO-listed Komodo National Park with options for Padar Island trekking, Pink Beach, Manta Point snorkeling, and Komodo dragon encounters on Komodo Island. Three tiers: open group trip (~IDR 2,500,000/$161.50 per person), speedboat, or luxury private yacht charter (up to IDR 95,000,000/$6,138 for 8 guests). The resort's own Dayara Boat — a Leopard 53 catamaran — is available for private charters.
Complimentary kayaks available for guests to explore the coastline and pier area. Reserve in advance.
Complimentary snorkel equipment available. The house reef under the overwater villas is particularly good — clownfish, parrotfish, urchins, and starfish visible. Staff also offer guided reef-restoration snorkel tours to see coral fragments being replanted.
Complimentary paddleboards for exploring the overwater villa pier and surrounding coastline.
For ages 4–12 (children under 4 must be accompanied by an adult). Activities inspired by Land Dweller and Sea Nomad traditions: Bajo canvas painting, Manggarai storytelling, Rangku Alu dance, seed planting, herb garden tours, Komodo dragon art, Manggarai dress-up, batik coloring, astronomy nights, and face painting.
Weekly masterclass in crafting cocktails with sopi — the local Manggarai palm spirit distilled from the arenga pinnata palm tree. An intimate window into Flores drinking culture.
Guided sunset hike up Sylvia Hill with panoramic views, drinks, bites, and a Polaroid camera. Approximately IDR 2,000,000 ($129) per person.
