Malabar Resort and Spa, Cochin
Colonial maritime heritage meets refined Kerala craft. Interiors lean into local textiles — coir, pottery, handmade carpets — without being overdone. It's calm, slightly formal in that old-India way, and the harbour setting gives it an unhurried quality you don't find in city hotels.
Book Heritage Wing rooms specifically — the Tower Wing is functional but misses what makes this hotel special
Why It Matters
One of the oldest operating hotels in Kerala, continuously run since 1935. The renovation preserved the Victorian-era bones of the Heritage Wing while modernizing everything behind the walls. The Rice Boat seafood restaurant moored at the water's edge has been a Kochi institution for decades and draws non-guests too.
Built in 1935 as a government hostel for ocean-going steamers, the Taj Malabar is one of those rare properties where the history is the point. Sitting at the tip of Willingdon Island — the largest artificial island in India — it looks out over Cochin Harbour on one side and the backwaters on the other. After a year-long head-to-toe renovation that wrapped in mid-2024, the place now has 82 rooms and 11 suites spread across two very different wings: the 1935 Heritage Wing, with its original wooden arches, marble bathrooms, and 1930s memorabilia, and the more straightforward Tower Wing, which trades atmosphere for waterfront views and a larger footprint.
