Why It Matters
One of Johannesburg's original boutique hotels and still the most design-driven. Each of the ten suites was handed to a different interior designer with a brief to bring in natural light and the garden. The result is genuinely distinct rooms — military canvas in one, bold colour-blocked South African landscape in another — rather than the usual variations-on-a-theme approach. Ten Bompas sits on 6,000 sqm in Dunkeld West, a quiet residential pocket that puts you a short drive from both Sandton's business towers and Rosebank's galleries. The entire property is suite-only — just 10 of them — each designed by a different person, so no two rooms look remotely alike. Originally a private dwelling, it was converted into a boutique hotel by proprietor Christoff van Staden, and it still feels more like a borrowed house than a hotel.

Bespoke Suite
All 10 suites are 60 sqm and each has been handed to a different interior designer, so the aesthetic ranges from classic Edwardian to highly contemporary with an African edge. Every suite has the same footprint: separate lounge with guest toilet, large bedroom, full bathroom with freestanding bath and separate shower with steam room. Each opens onto either a private garden or a terrace overlooking the hotel gardens. Some guests note the decor is showing age in places, but the scale and the fireplaces more than compensate.

The Winehouse Restaurant can also be configured for private dining and events.
