The Allegro Royal Sonesta Hotel Chicago Loop
Art Deco theatrical glamour with a residential warmth. Bold, historically rich, a little dramatic — but not stuffy about it. The lion mascot 'The Sovereign of Chicago' sums it up: dignified but playful.
The $32/day destination fee includes a $10 Legato Lounge credit, daily lobby coffee and afternoon tea/scones, plus Peloton access — worth factoring in when comparing rates
Why It Matters
Voted a top Chicago hotel by Condé Nast Traveler readers. The building itself is a landmark — it was the first place to legally sell alcohol after Prohibition ended in 1933. It hosted vaudeville stars, Chicago mayors, and Blackhawks ownership before becoming a modern hotel. The property has been through $31M (1998) and $15M (2014) renovations that carefully restored rather than erased its Art Deco character.
The Allegro Royal Sonesta is one of Chicago's most historically loaded hotels, sitting right in the middle of the Theatre District at 171 W. Randolph. The building dates to 1926 — originally the Bismarck Hotel, designed by Rapp and Rapp — and the Art Deco bones are still very much intact: marble staircase, original light fixtures, dramatic lobby proportions. Sonesta took over in 2020 and runs it under the Royal Sonesta flag, keeping the theatrical personality. And the hotel genuinely earns its location — Goodman Theatre is a short walk, Cadillac Palace Theatre is right around the corner, and City Hall is across the street.
