The Attwater
Coastal-chic nautical — colorful, design-forward, polished without being stuffy. Think Alexander Girard and Kelly Wearstler somehow had a love child in a renovated New England mansion.
The King Suite has a painted barn door separating bedroom from black-and-white tiled bath — worth the upgrade
Why It Matters
Won the 2013 Condé Nast Traveler Hot List and a 2019 Readers' Choice Award. One of the first design-forward boutique hotels in Newport, breaking the mold of the town's old-money B&B circuit. Breakfast is genuinely good and entirely included.
A 17-room boutique hotel spread across two buildings — the main neo-colonial mansion and the adjacent Urban Beach House — on a quiet street one block off Bellevue Avenue. The design is genuinely bold: ocean blues, coral, and burnt orange collide with lacquered surfaces, nailhead trim, and grommet accents meant to evoke sailboat hardware. It's the kind of place that feels more Brooklyn loft than Gilded Age Newport, and that's exactly the point. Breakfast is included, the staff doesn't hover, and the Cliff Walk is a 17-minute stroll from the front door.

How you'll actually spend your days.
A bike rental shop is located just down the street from the hotel — good for exploring the Cliff Walk corridor and beyond.
Weekend BYOB gathering held in the private courtyard at the sister property Gilded — a Gilded Age-inspired cocktail-style social with the hotel group. Attwater guests can participate.
The hotel runs an ongoing scavenger hunt throughout Newport via social media apps. A fun way to explore the historic district.
The hotel can arrange sailing trips on Narragansett Bay, including America's Cup-style charter excursions. Staff are happy to make bookings and recommendations.
