Datai Langkawi
Understated nature-forward luxury. No flashy lobbies, no designer branding everywhere. The architecture disappears into the jungle. Calm, purposeful, and surprisingly unstuffy. Sustainability is baked in — not as marketing, but as operations.
Book spa appointments in advance — it gets full and walk-in slots at peak times are rare
Why It Matters
One of Southeast Asia's most decorated eco-luxury resorts. Datai Bay is on National Geographic's Top 10 Beaches list. The property achieved zero waste to landfill in December 2021, EarthCheck Silver certified, and named one of Time Magazine's 100 Greatest Places in 2019. Its resident naturalists and marine biologists set it apart from virtually every competitor in the region.
The Datai Langkawi is a five-star resort in a 10 million-year-old rainforest on the northwest tip of Langkawi island, overlooking Datai Bay — a National Geographic Top 10 beach. Designed by architect Kerry Hill and originally opened in 1993, it underwent a US$60 million renovation in 2018, with interiors reimagined by Didier Lefort. Look, this is not a pool-party resort. The vibe here is rainforest sanctuary: dark woods, natural stone, floor-to-ceiling windows facing trees and water, and genuine wildlife on your doorstep — Dusky langurs, Great hornbills, Tokay geckos. 121 rooms, suites, and villas are split across the main canopy building, rainforest stilted villas, and beachfront villas with private pools.

Led by resident naturalists, these walks through the 10 million-year-old rainforest on the resort's private trails are the defining experience at The Datai.
