Langham Chicago
Mid-century modernist architecture meets British grand hotel tradition. Dark woods, rich textiles, a cream-and-violet palette, and floor-to-ceiling windows make the rooms feel luxurious without being fussy. Refined but not stuffy — the staff is genuinely warm.
Book Travelle for St. Patrick's Day specifically — window seats sell out fast and the river dyeing views from the 2nd floor are unbeatable.
Why It Matters
The building itself is the story: Mies van der Rohe's final office tower, completed in 1971, converted into one of Chicago's best hotels. Add a Forbes Five-Star Chuan Spa, the Travelle restaurant designed by David Rockwell, Chicago's most celebrated Afternoon Tea at Pavilion, a 67-foot indoor pool, and a curated Bauhaus-linked art collection with 140+ artists — this is the most complete luxury package in Chicago.
The Langham, Chicago sits inside AMA Plaza, the last skyscraper ever designed by Mies van der Rohe — a 52-story glass-and-steel tower right on the Chicago River. The hotel occupies the first 13 floors and brings together mid-century modernist bones with a distinctly British grand-hotel sensibility: afternoon tea in a soaring lounge, a full Chuan Spa rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and more than 140 works of art directly linked to the Bauhaus movement. Forbes Five-Star, Michelin Two Key, and the #1 hotel in both Chicago and Illinois per U.S. News & World Report 2024 — the accolades are real, and so is the consistency.
