Liberty Hotel
Historic-luxury with a social, nightlife-forward edge. The architecture is the star — soaring rotundas, 90-foot ceilings, original brick — but the programming keeps it buzzy all week long. Think Beacon Hill old-money meets Boston art-and-nightlife crowd.
Spend the extra on a Grand Deluxe City View room on floors 8-16 — the skyline and Charles River panorama is the real payoff
Why It Matters
It's a converted 1851 granite jail and a National Historic Landmark. The bones of Charles Street Jail are everywhere — the catwalks, the rotunda, the cell-block remnants — but the experience is full Marriott Luxury Collection. Plus, it has Scampo (Chef Lydia Shire) and a legendary Alibi bar, both open to the public.
The Liberty Hotel is a 298-room luxury hotel inside the rough-hewn granite walls of the 1851 Charles Street Jail — a National Historic Landmark at the foot of Beacon Hill. The conversion kept the imposing rotunda, the catwalks, even the cell-block vestiges, and poured $150 million into turning them into something worth being locked up in. It's the kind of place where the lobby bar is called Alibi and sits in the old drunk tank, where Thursday nights mean fashion shows in the Catwalk, and where Chef Lydia Shire runs one of Boston's best Italian restaurants in the same building. Conde Nast Traveler readers voted it #1 in Boston and #19 in the world in 2023.
