The Painted Lady
Maximalist historic boutique. Bold botanical wallpapers, moody star charts, and Chinoiserie patterns share space with original hardwood floors and exposed brick. Theatrical, Southern, and unapologetically colorful.
Book Madame Lou's Room if you want the most theatrical experience — it's the flagship and leans fully into the Lou Wooster mythology
Why It Matters
One of Birmingham's first design-forward boutique hotels, listed on both the Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels. Managed by Lark Hotels and rooted in a genuinely compelling local legend. The in-building cocktail bar, Bygones, has quickly become a destination in its own right.
The Painted Lady occupies the 1895 Eyer-Raden Building in Birmingham's Automotive Historic District — a sandstone-brick structure with a genuinely wild backstory. The hotel takes its name from Louise 'Lou' Wooster, a local madam who became a public health hero by opening her brothel as a cholera ward during the city's 1873 epidemic. All 22 rooms lean hard into that drama: vivid colors, bold graphics, and maximalist design layered over well-preserved 19th-century bones. Public spaces are minimal, and there is no elevator, so the original staircase is part of the experience whether you want it to be or not.

The hotel has co-hosted ghost hunt events in the historic 1800s building, leaning into the property's supernatural lore. Check the Facebook page for upcoming dates.
