The Prestige Hotel
Victorian-inspired magic and illusion. Black-and-white floor patterns, tropical botanics, rattan accents, brass fittings, and a pervasive sense of theatrical design. Chic without being cold. The vibe is boutique luxury that leans into spectacle.

Why It Matters
A Member of Design Hotels™ and Marriott Bonvoy participating hotel, The Prestige is the only hotel of its kind in Penang — inspired by Christopher Nolan's 2006 film about Victorian-era illusionists. The architecture is by K.L. Wong Architect; the interiors by the acclaimed Ministry of Design studio. Local scenes etched into interior bronze walls, a rooftop infinity pool overlooking the Straits, and an arcade of 12 dining and retail outlets make it one of the most layered stays in Malaysia.
Built on the site of a century-old godown on historic Church Street (Gat Lebuh Gereja), The Prestige is a 162-room design hotel that treats Victorian-era aesthetics as a canvas for contemporary magic. Interior design firm Ministry of Design worked through the entire building to create something genuinely odd and memorable — corridors where rotating lights cast intricate lattice shadows, beds that appear to levitate off the floor, concealed bar areas behind hidden doors, and props referencing Houdini's escape box. The result is a five-star property that feels more like walking into a whimsical art project than checking into a hotel. And it sits right inside a UNESCO World Heritage Site, two minutes on foot from the Pinang Peranakan Mansion.

How you'll actually spend your days.
A custom-designed gym accessible around the clock with your room keycard. Well-equipped but compact — described by guests as small but functional. Good for a quick morning session before heading out to explore.
The hotel's rooftop event space, ideal for private functions, product launches, and intimate gatherings. Accommodates up to 80 guests in a sophisticated outdoor setting.
The hotel provides a curated jogging map covering the George Town UNESCO Heritage area, passing colonial landmarks, street art, clan jetties, and temple streets — all within easy running or cycling distance of the hotel's front door.
Shaded poolside gazebos next to the rooftop infinity pool. Good for morning coffee, an afternoon read, or escaping the tropical heat with a light refreshment. Guests have noted that shade options by the pool are limited, so the gazebo is the best spot.
A ground-floor arcade featuring 12 dining and retail outlets beneath the Victorian facade. Spans artisanal beverages, fresh florals, and fine dining options. Worth a wander even if you are not staying — it is the street-facing heart of the hotel.
The rooftop pool overlooks the Straits of Malacca and the historic quayside. Poolside gazebos offer shade for sitting out. A genuinely spectacular vantage point, especially at sunset. Note: the pool underwent essential maintenance from 24 March to 30 April 2026.
