The Ritz-Carlton Philadelphia
Neoclassical grandeur meets Center City business-hotel practicality. Grand public spaces, restrained guest rooms. The history of the building does most of the heavy lifting.
The nightly rotunda light show runs at 5pm and is free — walk in off the street and watch it from the lobby bar even if you're not a guest
Why It Matters
Occupies one of Philadelphia's most storied civic buildings — a beaux-arts bank converted after a decade vacant. The 101-foot marble rotunda with its nightly light show is genuinely unlike anything else at a Ritz-Carlton. The 30th-floor Club Lounge, set in the original bank boardroom with French walnut paneling, has views out to both the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers.
The building was originally a replica of the Pantheon — built as the Girard Trust Company bank between 1904 and 1908 — and the hotel hasn't let that history go to waste. Nine thousand tons of Georgia marble, a 101-foot dome with a nightly animated light show, and a lobby bar built around the original oculus (once used to haul money from the vault below) make this one of the most architecturally distinctive Ritz-Carlton properties anywhere. The rooms themselves are solid luxury without being showy, and the location directly across from City Hall puts you in the center of everything.
